AVA Attends £1 Industry Roundtable

  • Round £1 coin ceases to be legal tender from 15th October
  • Treasury focusing on ‘The Great Turn Off’

On 26th September, Jonathan Hart, the Chief Executive of the AVA, met with representatives from similar industries to discuss vending’s readiness for the ending of the legal tender status of the round £1 coin on 15th October.  The event took place at HM Treasury, London and was hosted by Andrew Jones MP, the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury.

Throughout the summer, the Royal Mint has been encouraging people to “spend, bank or donate” round pounds and has made a particular effort to promote the return of round pounds through media activity.  You may also have seen in some of the coverage announcing that The Royal Mint and HM Treasury have joined forces with BBC Children in Need for Pudsey’s Round Pound Countdown.

Jonathan Hart said

“It has been very useful to speak to other industries all dealing with the same issue and preparing for the change together.  It was a worthwhile opportunity to share our views with the Minister and with our close relationships with The Royal Mint and HM Treasury, I feel the industry is in a good position to say goodbye to the round pound.”
