Scottish Regional Meeting and Burns Night 2017
It was that time of year again where Christmas had passed us in the blink of an eye and we were all back to work again…albeit a few pounds heavier! However, the AVA was here to pick you up with the annual Burns night! The fine folk of the AVA joined together on the 20th January to celebrate the legendary life of the Scottish poet, Robert Burns. The event was held at the stunning Dalmahoy Hotel in Edinburgh – a new venue for the event in recent years.
As always the day began with the Scottish regional meeting – this was a great chance for the members to network with the people they may not usually see being separated by distance. Jonathan Hart of the AVA opened up the meeting with an update on the AVA and all that they had achieved throughout 2016. The first guest speaker for the event was Andy Mee of Business Doctors. Andy entertained us with ‘Employee Engagement – The electricity that makes everything else multiply’. Andy was followed by the topical subject of the new Scottish Polymer notes which was presented to us by Michael Downy from The Committee of Scottish Bankers.
For the evening event all members and guests were dolled up in their finest black tie dress – a great opportunity to dig out black tie suits for the men and evening dresses for the ladies. We were entertained in the stunning cocktail bar by the traditional sounds of the bagpipes (just dont stand too close) while sipping on our champagne. When the time came we followed the piper down to the Dalmahoy Suite which was decked out with traditional tartan features. The dinner began with the traditional address to the haggis and a shot of whisky, or in my case passing it to a willing recipient next to me. We dined on a traditional Scottish menu, which of course included haggis! The entertainment for the night was a local well known Scottish band ‘The Scraggly Cats’ and a photobooth. The entertainment was the star of the show and well received by all. All photobooth pictures are available to view, or to laugh at – whatever you prefer. The night concluded in the Cocktail bar where there are reports of people staying up until the wee hours but of course we cannot confirm as we were tucked up in bed.
